In their wildest dreams, the Founding Fathers of the United States never would have imagined themselves represented in the hit musical “Hamilton.” But they might be fully turning over with laughter in their tombs, now that the parody musical “Shamilton,” by Atlanta drag queen Tyra Rex is coming to the stage.

Over four nights at City Winery, “Shamilton” will sashay through the story and songs of the Broadway hit “Hamilton,” with a star-studded cast featuring a who’s who of Atlanta drag queens and kings.

Tyra Rex, director, performer, writer and producer of “Shamilton,” recently spoke with “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes about the upcoming production, set to be on stage Aug. 22, 24, 25 and 28.

Rex grew up with a deep reverence and love for history, endlessly fascinated by how our perception of the past is directly influenced by the stories a nation tells itself.

Her version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” brings together stories that the American public is already deeply familiar with and mashes those stories into a modernized drag version, replete with pop-culture references and bedazzled outfits. This show “is the history of our nation, but.. told through our eyes,” says Rex.

“If you like the musical, if you like history, if you like drag – if you like all three… there’s something in there for you.”
