Early voters in Georgia’s 13th Congressional District want new, younger leadership
78-year-old Democratic U.S. Rep. David Scott represents the 13th Congressional District. He’s been in Congress for over two decades and faces at least six opponents in the primary election on May 21.
Some Rockdale County voters like Lakeesha Wallace did not allow the gloomy weather to stop them from going to the polls earlier this week.
“Now, I’m a proponent for wisdom,” Wallace said. “But, you also have to understand when it’s time to pass the baton to the next generation.”
Several other people feel the same way Wallace does. Scott’s Democratic opponents have commented on his age and ability to participate in the race.
Meanwhile, college student Charlize Taffe says she prefers to have someone more relatable.
“Seeing younger faces, they kinda can advocate for people of my generation and also older generations as well,” Taffe said. “And they typically have a more flexible mindset as they’re able to not necessity be stuck in the quote-unquote ‘old ways’”
Congressman Scott did not engage in the 13th Congressional District Atlanta Press Club Debate, and his campaign Facebook page was updated a week ago for the first time this election.
The last time Scott gave an interview was in March of this year. He told WABE he has plans for his next term in office.
“Thank God I’m in good health, moving and doing the people’s work,” Scott said.
Congressman Scott’s office did not respond to WABE’s request to comment on this story.
District 13 recently underwent redistricting but now includes portions of Newton, Gwinnett, Henry, Clayton, DeKalb and Rockdale counties.
Early voting ends Friday, May 17. General voting for the primary begins Tuesday, May 21.
