East Point Police Chief Resigns

City of East Point Police Chief Woodrow Blue has resigned from the post he’s held for more than two years, with few details as to why.As heard on the radio

According to a statement released by the city Monday, Blue tendered his resignation yesterday, and it was made effective the same day.

In his resignation letter to the East Point City Manager Ellis Mitchell, Blue said he was leaving his post for “personal reasons,” but gave no further explanation.

“I have appreciated the opportunity to serve the citizens of East Point, and I wish the city all the best in the future,” Blue wrote.

Blue’s resignation comes just weeks after a local family announced plans to sue the city and police department over the April death of Gregory Lewis Towns Jr., who was reportedly shocked with a Taser six times while handcuffed.

A city spokesperson said the police chief’s decision to step down “had nothing to do” with the incident.

Blue asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate the circumstances around the tasing. He ordered an independent investigation as well. Both have since been sent to the Fulton County district attorney’s office for review.

Calls to the East Point Police Department for comment did not receive a response before airtime.

East Point Councilman Alexander Gothard says he has no details regarding Blue’s motivation to resign, but said he and the council support the city police.

“We try to give the chief everything he needs to do his job, whether it’s Chief Blue or the person before or after Chief Blue. The police department will always have my full support.

East point is now undertaking a national search to find Blue’s replacement.

In the meantime, 26-year department veteran Major Tommy Garder will serve as interim chief.
