A new grocery store is being planned for senior residents near Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn neighborhood, which will soon provide easier access to food security in the historic community.

Economic development agency Invest Atlanta is partnering with the City of Atlanta to bring a Goodr grocery store to Edgewood Avenue near downtown. The store will be funded by an Atlanta Food Access Catalyst Grant worth $330,000.

The closest grocery store for residents in the area is Kroger on Caroline Street, which is about ten minutes away by car.

Atlanta City Councilmember Liliana Bakhtiari says the new store will serve at least a thousand elderly residents. According to them, it will sit close to several senior living facilities, including the Veranda at Auburn Pointe.

“It’s part of modern-day redlining to have communities that do not have regular access to wholesome nutrition, to food, to grocery stores. (To) anything outside of fast food and oftentimes gas stations, where they source their nutrition from,” Bakhtiari said.

According to 2022 data from Feeding America, nearly 9% of Georgia’s senior population was food insecure. This equated to about 190,800 people in the state.

Goodr officials say the new store on Edgewood will help about 250 people with access to free groceries monthly.

“We’re able to subsidize it with the funding that we’ve received from Invest Atlanta to actually make sure that people have access to food at no cost, which really is a game changer (rather) than having access to food that they still can’t afford,” said Jasmine Crow-Houston, founder and CEO of Goodr.

The new store is scheduled to open in early 2025.
