Dr. Dhaval Desai, who specializes in internal medicine and pediatrics, can recall many hard moments during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Desia, who serves as the director of hospital medicine at Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital, says he had to navigate life as a husband, father and doctor – while witnessing suffering and death daily.

While working on the front lines responding to the global health crisis, Desia remembers the difficulty of watching patients die without their loved ones nearby. Some having to say their goodbyes over an iPad.

Desia also recalls colleagues seeing the toll it was taking on him before he realized it himself. His journey is now the focus of a new memoir, “Burning Out on the COVID Front Lines.”

On Tuesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Dr. Desai talked candidly with show host Rose Scott about his book, the challenges he faced during the pandemic and what he did to manage his mental health and change his life.
