Emory Hospitals Missing Massive Batch of Patient Records
Emory Healthcare is reaching out to thousands of surgical patients after realizing a batch of discs filled with medical records have gone missing.
The discs contain personal information on more than 300,000 surgical patients who used Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, and Emory’s Ambulatory Surgery Center between 1990 and 2007
Most of the lost records include social security numbers, but Emory spokesman Lance Skelly says there’s no evidence that any information has been misused so far.
“This is information that was backed on a very old system that was no longer in use and so it was information that cannot be transferred to a new system so that was why we kept those discs like we did.”
He says the hospital is in the process of contacting all affected patients and offering ID theft protection services.
“We’re hoping and asking anybody who is impacted that they would regularly review their credit reports for anything they don’t recognize.”
Based on the investigation so far, Skelly says the lost discs were removed from a storage location sometime in February.
Last year, in a much smaller case, an Emory orthopedic clinic reported an incident in which about 80 patients had their personal information stolen.
