Entire North Atlanta High School Administrative Team Replaced
The abrupt change in leadership within North Atlanta High School is causing quite a stir.
Friday, Atlanta Public Schools superintendent Erroll Davis sent parents a letter detailing a complete overhaul of the school’s entire administrative leadership team.
That’s until North Atlanta’s new principal arrives.
It’s not that parents didn’t know Dr. Howard Taylor would be North Atlanta’s new principal.
His appointment was approved at the last APS school board meeting.
But it’s the sudden removal of interim Principal Mark Mygrant and the installation of a transition team that leaves APS officials with some explaining to do.
Steve Alford is the district’s spokesperson.
“We’ve been preparing for new leadership at North Atlanta after learning the principal would retire at the end of last school year. So, all of our decisions about what happens in all our schools are driven by our instructional leaders and what’s best for our students.”
Dr. Taylor is currently a principal in the Gwinnett County Schools system.
He starts October 29th.
But until he arrives, Alford says a new transition team was put in place by APS superintendent Erroll Davis and other district officials.
“This transition process is the beginning of Dr. Taylor moving in to his role as principal at North Atlanta. We’re transitioning to new leadership at North Atlanta now.”
Alford said he couldn’t comment on whether or not the changes were tied to job performances.
“I can’t speak specifically of performance issues with previous academy leaders but they’re still with our system. They bring value to our system and we want them to continue their careers with APS. Hopefully they will do that but they will be doing it at other schools.”
Over the weekend, parents took to social media to vent their frustration.
Former Principal Mark Mygrant told the Atlanta Journal Constitution, he was told on Friday, his services were no longer needed and to leave the building.
Mygrant and parents weren’t the only ones taken by surprise.
Several APS board members told WABE they too had no idea the changes were coming.
They were informed by email on Friday.
Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. superintendent Erroll Davis plans to hold a community meets at North Atlanta High to explain the changes.
