Execution Date Set For Ga. Female Death Row Inmate

Georgia Department of Corrections

Kelly Gissendaner, the only woman on Georgia’s death row, has a new execution date.

On Friday, a Gwinnett County Superior Court Judge ordered for the execution window to be from Sept. 29 to Oct. 6.

Gissendaner is on death row for hiring someone to kill her husband in 1997.

Her execution was halted at the last minute in March, after Georgia Department of Corrections officials found that the lethal injection drug appeared to be “cloudy.”

There have been no executions in Georgia since.

Gissendaner’s lawyers sued the state, challenging the state’s lethal injection secrecy laws. Under current state law, information about where the drug is manufactured is kept secret.

Her lawyers claimed that the state couldn’t adequately protect her Eighth Amendment rights, which bans cruel and unusual punishment.

A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit last month.
