Georgia Republican leaders have voted to expel one prominent figure from the party who’s an outspoken critic of President-elect Donald Trump and once promised to reunite his beloved GOP.
The state executive committee unanimously voted out former Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan on Monday.
This expulsion comes after Duncan openly endorsed both President Joe Biden’s then Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaigns.
In the resolution led by Georgia Republican Party Chairman Josh McKoon, the committee claims Duncan violated his oath of allegiance.
The resolution also states Duncan undermined and sabotaged the candidacy of Trump-backed Republicans like Herschel Walker, who ran for U.S. Senate against Democrat Raphael Warnock.
Duncan is demanded to “cease calling himself a Republican” for personal profit. He’s now banned from all property owned or leased by the Georgia GOP, including all future events. The party is also urging media outlets to refer to Duncan as an “expelled Republican.”
Duncan shared his reaction to the move on X, formerly known as Twitter. He also joined WABE’s “Morning Edition” to share his next move. For now, he’s not claiming to be a Democrat.
“I think the right spot for me to continue to hang my hat is just as a good, old-fashioned American, calling honest balls and strikes. I think the Republican Party has some significant headwinds,” Duncan tells WABE.
“If Donald Trump shows up to work as a child, as a petulant child, whose sole purpose every day is to fill his grievances with silly little acts, then we’re going to have an incredibly difficult time over the next four years as a country, and certainly as a party.”
