Feds Fine Norcross Tortilla Manufacturer $150,000

The federal government says a metro-Atlanta tortilla manufacturer is endangering its employees, levying fines that could cost the company more than $150,000.As heard on the radio

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Norcross-based Ole Mexican Foods with 19 worker-safety infractions – two repeat, 14 serious and three other-than-serious safety and health violations – following a June complaint inspection, according to OSHA.  The two repeat offenses – exposing employees to amputation risks and failing to adequately explain some machinery and procedures – were first recorded in 2011; they come with a combined $77,000 dollar penalty.

“When we encounter unguarded equipment where someone could get entangled in the equipment or have their fingers hands or arms caught into in-running in-points and suffer amputations, we’re looking at what may occur,” said William Fulcher, director of OSHA’s Atlanta East-Area Office.

Other violations include another count of exposing employees to amputation risks, obstructing exists and failing to prevent trip and fall hazards, among others.

Fulcher says the company has responded to the citations and has requested an informal hearing to discuss ways to solve the problems.

The meeting is set for Jan. 6.
