A new 40-day session of the Georgia General Assembly is officially underway, beginning Monday with Gov. Brian Kemp laying out his priorities for the upcoming session.

WABE politics reporter Rahul Bali joined “All Things Considered” to lay out what’s at the top of the governor’s to-do list.

Kemp announced new budget proposals for education and school safety, including an extra $21,635 each for safety, on top of $47,125 already budgeted this year.

The plan also includes $212 million for new facilities and school buses.

Meanwhile, Georgia Senate Republicans reauthorized an investigation into Fulton County DA Fani Willis, sparking frustration from the Democratic minority. Republicans also introduced a bill to ban transgender girls from competing in girls’ sports, a move drawing renewed criticism from Democrats.
