The suspensions came after DeKalb’s accrediting agency placed the district on probation for inadequate board governance. Edler, who was battling breast cancer, appealed the suspension. The day of her hearing, Edler told WABE she deserved to be reinstated.
“The fact that some of the things that I have put in place have moved forward with this board, I think is a good thing,” Edler said. “I think that my tenure on the board has been positive, constructive, and deliberate in our task for student achievement.”
Edler was an accountant and served on the board for almost two years before the suspension. She is survived by her husband and three children.
Through a statement, DeKalb County superintendent Michael Thurmond said Edler was “a tireless advocate for all children and was committed to improving the quality of education in DeKalb.”
