Former President Jimmy Carter has now been returned to Georgia after lying in state at the US Capitol in Washington, where a funeral service was held Thursday at the National Cathedral featuring a eulogy by President Joe Biden.

Carter grew up on a farm just outside Plains, the tiny Southwest Georgia farm town he called home for most of a century.

Following a service at Maranatha Baptist Church, the motorcade passed through the tiny downtown, home to Carter’s presidential campaign headquarters.

WABE politics reporter Sam Gringlas was there to speak to local individuals who knew the Carters and joined “All Things Considered” to reflect on his legacy.

Gringlas said visitors have been filling the pages of a tribute book on Main Street and flowers lay by a stone statue of the 39th president.

Carter will be buried beside his wife near the modest home they shared for more than six decades.
