Hours before Vice President Kamala Harris was scheduled to land in Atlanta for a presidential campaign rally on Tuesday at Georgia State University’s Convocation Center, former President Donald Trump’s campaign announced that he would appear at a rally at the same venue just four days later — with his running mate Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance in tow.

The dueling visits to Atlanta further reinforce Georgia’s status as a battleground state in the 2024 presidential election.

The Trump campaign made the announcement Tuesday morning.

Trump accepted the Republican Party’s presidential nomination earlier this month at the GOP convention.

Saturday’s event will be at least Trump’s third visit to Georgia this year, including for the June debate in Atlanta against President Joe Biden. Biden’s poor performance sparked widespread concerns about his electability, and ultimately led to his withdrawal from the race and subsequent endorsement of Harris.

Harris is the Democrats’ presumptive presidential nominee. The party delegates will hold a virtual roll call vote to select their nominee as early as this week. The official vote will take place at the Democratic National Convention being held Aug. 19-22. Harris has been a regular visitor to Georgia. Tuesday’s rally will be her sixth visit in 2024. But it’s her first since Biden dropped out and her presidential campaign started.
