Fulton Sends Out 30,000 New Voter Registration Cards

Tens of thousands of Fulton County voter registration cards were mailed out this week, the late postmark the result of glitches in the state’s new voter registration software. As heard on the radio

More than 30,000 cards were sent out Monday and Tuesday to voters in 11 Fulton precincts – nine in Atlanta and two in East Point. Under Georgia law, voter registration cards are supposed to be mailed out by Oct. 7 to tell voters where they’re supposed to vote on Nov. 5.

“I would imagine some people are going to start receiving them today,” says Richard Barron, the director of registration and elections for Fulton County.

Earlier this month, the county pulled about 20,000 cards before they were mailed after after local election officials found errors, like incorrect polling locations. A couple hundred faulty cards, however, were mailed out. Barron says the errors resulted from glitches in the state’s new voter registration software, ElectionNet. The state’s 159 counties began slowly converting to the new system late last year, though Barron says Fulton County didn’t move onto it until July.

Voter cards are printed by the Secretary of State’s office and mailed out by the counties. According to his office, Secretary of State Brian Kemp was not available for an interview.

As for how Election Day will go, Barron is optimistic, and says he doesn’t expect problems.

“We’re more ready than we were a few weeks ago, and I think the system has jumped ahead leaps and bounds since then,” Barron says.

Gwinnett, Cobb and DeKalb also reported problems due to software issues.
