Georgia-Born Mezzo Soprano on “The Olympics of Opera”
During this Fall Fund Drive, we’re looking back at some of our favorite work we’ve brought you on City Café in recent months.
Jamie Barton is a Georgia native, a rising star in the world of opera, and this summer she became the U.S. representative in what’s often referred to as “The Olympics of Opera.”
The mezzo-soprano visited the WABE studios to talk with Lois Reitzes about how she spent months preparing for the Cardiff Singer of the World competition that took place in June.
She also graced us with a few vocal warm-ups.

After speaking with WABE, Jamie Barton went on to win the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition.
In this web bonus, Jamie tells the story of her very first time stepping onto the stage of the Metropolitan Opera, when she competed in the 2007 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. That competition was filmed for the Susan Fromke documentary The Audition, something Barton had no idea of at the time.
