Georgia Perimeter College to Cut More Than 280 Positions
Facing a budget deficit of $25 million, the interim president of Georgia Perimeter College announced today a plan to lay off more than 280 staff and faculty.
In a campus-wide email, Interim President Rob Watts said 215 full-time employees and 67 part-time positions will be cut.
Tenured and tenure-track faculty are safe from the layoffs.
WABE contacted officials in various departments seeking comment, however most declined to go on record. Some employees were expecting about a 100 fewer cuts.
She didn’t want to give her name, but one employee did say the campus is anxiously awaiting specifics.
“It’s an emotional day, nobody knows exactly who it’s going to be, you pray for the ones that might be let go and you pray for yourself,” she said.
In the email, Interim President Watts stated some of the college’s internal institutes would be closing.
Georgia Perimeter’s former president and an employee in the school’s finance office were removed in May after state officials discovered the shortfall.
State auditors are currently analyzing the college’s financial records to understand how the school’s deficit grew so large.
Georgia Perimeter is the state’s third-largest public college, enrolling nearly 27,000 students.
Watts and other school officials declined to be interviewed for this story.
