Georgia politicians react to health care ruling

Georgia politicians from both parties are reacting to today’s health care law ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court.

Fulton County state senator Horacena Tate, a Democrat, says she was excited by the ruling.

“It’s a great thing for Georgians,” said Tate. “It’s a great thing for working families and we are very pleased with the fact that they upheld the Affordable Healthcare Act.”

Under the Affordable Care Act, the number of Georgians who will be covered under Medicaid will rise. The question is how many more people will be on state-federal health insurance plan for low-income Georgians and how will the state pay for the increase?

Atlanta State Senator Vincent Fort, a Democrat, hopes Governor Nathan Deal, a Republican, will focus on those questions and not on politics.

“What I would say to Governor Deal and the Republican leadership is be responsible,” said Fort. “Put politics aside. Do the right thing by Georgia families.”

Governor Deal and Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens, also a Republican, released a joint statement today. In it, they expressed disappointment over the decision. They also urged Congress to repeal the law.
