Georgia Senate Considers House-Passed “Slowpoke Bill”

Lollygagging in the left lane of Georgia highways and interstates may soon be illegal.

The Georgia State House overwhelmingly approved House Bill 459 on Wednesday.

That would make it a misdemeanor to drive at a slow rate of speed in the left lane.

The bill is sponsored by Rep. Bill Hitchens (R-Rincon).

In an email to WABE, Hitchens says his focus is on slow drivers who, in his words, impede the free flow of traffic.

Supporters of the bill say if the bill becomes law, it could help reduce traffic and road rage incidents on Georgia’s highways and interstates.

“It can be frustrating, obviously, and it can cause a hazard because other motorists are trying to drive around them and it can become dangerous.  So I do see a need for it, but certainly we don’t want to encourage people to drive above the posted speed limit,” says Lt. Jay Baker, with the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office.

The bill says in part: “No person shall drive a motor vehicle at such a slow speed as to impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation.”

Baker admits enforcement will be tough.

“Hopefully getting the word out about this law will encourage drivers to see that it can become an issue and will encourage them to stay in the right lane if they’re moving at a slow rate of speed.”

The bill now goes to the Senate.
