Georgia State Unveils Master Sports Complex Plan
They have the vision.
Now all they need is the money and the land.
The downtown Atlanta University is moving in phases to build top notch sports venues.
If you build it, they’re supposed to come and for Georgia State University that includes recruits and fans.
The university has 19 NCAA sports and wants the venues as close to campus as possible.
James Greenwell is the executive senior associate athletics director.
The blueprint, Greenwell says, shows the master plan to accommodate all the sports.
“It’s the first step and what we wanted to do was to put out there initially that we want to take the facilities we do have and improve them and make them more attractive and more functional to meet the needs of our student athletes.”
The other challenge says Greenwell is finding the land.
Georgia State would like 28 acres of property.
“Operationally you’re better off if your facilities are real close to one another but I think back to the philosophy of getting us close to campus as possible, I think we’re going to have to forgo that synergy in order to get what we’re looking there”
There’s no priority list in terms of what comes first, a new baseball complex or volleyball arena says Greenwell.
More importantly funding is also crucial.
A cost of 80 million dollars was projected last year.
Greenwell says that amount is not fixed.
