Tuesday, federally-run healthcare “exchanges” go live as part of the Affordable Care Act.An audio version of this story

An exchange is a web portal where consumers can shop for a health plan and possibly qualify for a subsidy, and those trained to help consumers through the process are known as “navigators.”

Some local navigators will focus on Georgia’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.

“LGBT individuals, particularly lesbians and people of color, are more likely to be un- or underinsured than their straight counterparts,” says Linda Ellis, executive director of The Health Initiative“The possibility of affordable insurance coverage is a significant thing for our community.”

Ellis says her organization is partnering with six Georgia cities that have established LGBT communities.

The Initiative has three navigators working toward certification.

A spokesman for Ga. Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens told WABE as of Thursday, only three navigators period were fully certified in Ga.
