Georgia’s Technical Colleges Add Degree

– Three of Georgia's technical colleges will offer a new degree program starting next August. School officials say it will give students more options. WABE's Martha Dalton has the story.

Georgia's technical colleges in Augusta, Columbus, and Savannah will soon offer an associate of science degree. System spokesman Mike Light says it will be more academic than an associate of applied science degree they already offer:

“That will help students who want to transfer to other colleges. Other colleges will accept those kinds of credits.”

Light says technical schools still offer degrees in electrical engineering, plumbing, and auto repair. But he says they're also expanding their curriculum to fit the shifting job market.

“We're moving into industries like health care, aerospace, logistics and transportation, industries that are expanding in Georgia that are growing with the 21st century economy.”

Light says the cost of the new program will be minimal. And tuition rates won't be affected.
