Gov. Deal Names Members of Child Welfare Reform Council

Governor Nathan Deal today named the members of his new Child Welfare Reform Council, tasking the group with finding ways to improve the state’s troubled child welfare system.Broadcast Version

A bill in the Georgia legislature creating a pilot program privatizing part of the state’s child welfare system died right after the governor announced the establishment of the council.

Deal expressed his hopes for the group: “I think this council will give us the kind of input from the private sector as well as those who serve in the General Assembly from public sector to chart a path for our state that we can be proud of. “

The council’s 20 members include not only General Assembly members, state agency representatives, and members of the judiciary but also corporate leaders and members of nonprofit groups that serve children. Community volunteer Stephanie Blank will serve as chair.

The ill-fated legislation would have created a three-year pilot program privatizing services such as adoption and foster care.

Deal says he hopes to have a report from the new council by the end of this year.
