Grassroots Group Wants End to Georgia 400 Tolls

A grassroots group, called “Voter GA” held a meeting in Roswell last night to protest the tolls on Georgia 400. The tolls were supposed to end once the stretch of the highway inside the perimeter was built. But, in 2010, state officials decided to extend them for ten years. State transportation officials say the money  is funding highway improvement projects. But Garland Favorito, the founder of Voter GA, is skeptical.

“That money will be misappropriated, in our opinion, to other parts of the state miles and miles away from where the toll booth was originally constructed,” Favorito says.

But the State Road and Tollway Authority says they’ve been transparent about the process.

“The projects that have been on our website for two years now are the projects that are being funded, some of which have been completed,” says SRTA spokesperson Malika Wilkins, “We haven’t deviated from that list on our website and it’s still there.”

But that hasn’t deterred Voter GA’s efforts to stop the toll. They plan to present an online petition to state officials in the middle of July.
