The Georgia State University Foundation has purchased 55 Park Place in downtown Atlanta.

Georgia State says the $33.5 million dollar purchase will give the university access to more than half a million square feet of office space.

55 Park Place is one of more than half a dozen buildings recently purchased by the Foundation as the university works to increase its downtown footprint.

Georgia State University Foundation Chair Ken Bernhardt says the property was a key piece of land for the University.

“It’s a very strategic location. It’s right between what was called the Sun Trust Building at Woodruff Park, and between that and the new law school, which we’re breaking ground for, and eventually a business school, so it really solidifies that piece of land alongside the park.”

Bernhardt also says it will aid the university as its attendance grows.

“We currently have 32,000 students…That’s a big increase from where we were four years ago. We’re slated to go to 36,000 in the short term, and eventually 40,000 students.”

About a dozen current tenants will remain in 55 park place until their leases expire.
