Hale Woodruff’s Atlanta Years

In the first part of today’s show, we visited the High Museum of Art to check out painter Hale Woodruff’s murals from Talledega College.  Now we take a look at Woodruff’s Atlanta tenure, and his impact as instructor for fifteen years at Atlanta University, beginning in 1931.

It’s in the former library at the university, that Woodruff installed what he considered to be the finest mural of his career.  We went to see the mural, which is still on display today at what is now Clark Atlanta University—to learn more about Hale Woodruff the teacher, and his legacy.

Audio of the oral history interview with William Hayden comes to us courtesy of the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library Archives.
