Handel Misses Republican Runoff

Despite gaining momentum in the polls prior to election day, former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel came in third in the Republican Primary for U.S. Senate.

Early in the evening Handel was optimistic, but hours later she gave what appeared to be a concession speech. Handel told supporters, “We gave it our best shot.”

“I don’t want anybody to be sad, because there’s no shame in doing this well with how little we started with,” said Handel.

Handel then urged supporters to get behind either businessman David Perdue or Congressman Jack Kingston.

“Just pick whichever one you can feel like you can rally around most, and be focused on them, so that we do our jobs come November, which is to beat Michelle Nunn.”

State Senator Josh McKoon served as a state co-chair for the campaign and says it all came down to money.

“It’s hard to compete with a combined $12 million spent when you have $1 million on your side.”

This is the second statewide race Handel has lost within four years. In 2010, Governor Nathan Deal defeated Handel by a narrow margin.

Handel is also known for a national firestorm that erupted several years ago when she served as an executive with Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Handel was involved with a decision to cut funding ties with Planned Parenthood. The organization later reversed its stance and Handel resigned.

There’s no word on what she plans to do next.
