Heightened Security for Peachtree Road Race

City and state officials say they’re ready for the 60,000 runners and more than 100,000 spectators expected for the 44th running of the Peachtree Road Race on July 4th.

A joint command center, with several agencies participating, will begin operations a day before the race to secure the course.

Atlanta Police Chief George Turner says the command center will monitor the race via live cameras.  “There should not be a single space on the route that will not have camera coverage,” Turner told reporters Thursday. “So we look forward to being able those eyes on that situation prior to the start of the event and throughout the event. “

Security has been beefed up this year because of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Race organizers are asking everyone to leave back-packs at home and to report anything they see during the race that might be suspicious.
