Historic Randolph-Lucas House Moves to New Home Tonight
There is a late-night parade, of sorts, planned on Peachtree tonight.
The Randolph-Lucas house is moving down Peachtree Road from Buckhead to its new home off Peachtree Street in Ansley Park.
Starting around midnight, the 1924 mansion will begin a two-and-a-half mile trip — one story at a time — to a staging area across from Woodruff Arts Center.
Christopher Jones, one of the home’s owners, says “We have cranes that are about five stories high. The second floor will be lifted onto the first floor and the roof as well, and then she will be rolled onto the foundation that is sitting there waiting for her.”
The house will eventually move a few feet more to a lot on Peachtree Circle. Jones and his partner, Roger Smith, been working on getting the home ready to move for almost a year.
“And that’s why we have called this the impossible possible project,” says Jones. “But how often do you see a house split in two hanging over Peachtree Street where you can see the underpinnings of the house and then see it lowered to the ground?”
Barring any complications, tonight’s trip should take about four hours.
