Home Depot Pledges To Help Veterans
Addressing the Atlanta Press Club, Home Depot CEO Frank Blake said he was encouraged by signs of a housing recovery. But his focus here was on the recovery of Veterans and their families, as they transition back to civilian life. “Our mission,” he said, “is to ensure as best we can that every veteran has a place to call home.”
The Home Depot Foundation has pledged $50-million over next three years to non-profits that specifically address veterans’ housing needs. This is on top of the $30-million already donated since 2011. “Over the last year, our non-profit partners and our own volunteers have changed the living environments for more than 5,000 veterans.
Over the next two months he says Home Depot volunteers will be fanning out across the country to complete as many projects as possible, “from remodeling local VFW’s, to repairing transitional housing for Veterans, and building community gardens near facilities serving veterans.”
Blake also announced that the company will hold job transition workshops for veterans, across the country, dubbed Mission Transition, on October 27. They’ve also launched a ‘skills translator‘ on the company’s website to help “translate and match and applicant’s unique military skills with positions that might offer the best fit for them.”
Blake says Home Depot has already hired 9,000 Veterans in 2012.
