How to protect your home from winter damage

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) is a nonprofit backed by the insurance industry focused on resiliency solutions for home and business owners.

As lows in Georgia drop below freezing, the latest ValuePenguin study shows winter weather will cause an estimated $61.8 million in property damage in 2024.

Rachael Gauthier, a meteorologist with IBHS, joined “All Things Considered” to talk about steps people can take to strengthen and protect their homes this season against common causes of damage, including interior water damage from frozen pipes and leaky roofs.



Some of those include clearing gutters and downspouts of debris so water can freely move away from your home, ensuring pipes in hard-to-reach places are properly insulated to avoid frozen pipes, and sealing cracks or gaps on your home’s exterior.
