Hotel Prices Coming Down as Final Four Draws Near

You may have heard of sky-high hotel prices in Atlanta because of the Final Four, but that is no longer necessarily true.

Hotwire.com specializes in last minute bookings. Its president, Clem Bason, says advance bookings for big events always cause prices to rise.  But then people’s plans change. “So a day or two prior, cancellations occur,” said Bason. “Hotels that might have blocked out rooms they might then release them into the marketplace.” Bason says prices for the newly-available rooms are likely to be more reasonable. An audio version of this story

Bason also says the suburbs are getting some last minute Final Four business.  On Thursday afternoon, hotwire.com booked about 100 rooms downtown. It also booked almost 70 in the Perimeter Mall area.

According to Bason, “That’s much more than normal, so there’s absolutely an effect of people kind of choosing these suburban areas, and then they’re going to drive into town for the game.”

The Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates the Final Four will bring more than 100,000 basketball fans to town.
