House Music is a style of high-tempo, electronic dance music that originated in Chicago in the early 1980s, on the heels of the disco era. What began primarily in queer black and brown communities has become much straighter and whiter as the genre has spread internationally.

Atlanta’s own thriving House scene is evident with its many House parties and events such as House in the Park, an example of House Music as a unifying movement.

This year’s 19th annual House in the Park takes place Sunday, September 3, from noon to 8 p.m. at the Grant Park Recreation Center.

One of the featured DJs for House in the Park, Dj Kemit, is among the featured DJs for the event. His name is synonymous with House music.

In this interview, “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes is joined by DJ Kemit to talk more about the House music genre and event.

“House music is about bringing people together, it doesn’t matter about the race, creed, orientation, where you are from, people come together for the healing feeling of house music,” DJ Kemit said.

House in the Park takes place this Sunday at the Grant Park Recreation Center and more information is available here.
