Hundreds Gather at Capitol to Protest Controversial Bills
The line of Protestors stretched around the entire block of the capitol building. They included members of Atlanta Jobs with Justice, Occupy Atlanta, Working Women 9 to 5, and various unions. Charlie Flemming is the president of the Georgia AFL-CIO.
“469 is probably the most egregious one. It steps on our civil rights, it steps on our rights as union workers, and it actually puts the state of Georgia in the business of trying to bust unions.”
Senate Bill 469 restricts protest and picketing in labor disputes. 43 year old Greg Giess like many of the union workers at the protest, sees this as a step towards losing his civil rights.
“This is a basic right that corporate America is trying to step on, and take from ordinary people”
Other bills protested included a ban on undocumented students attending public universities, exempting religiously-affiliated employers from covering contraception, and restricting abortions after 20 weeks.
