I-285 Southside Speed Limit Increases to 65 MPH
Starting Nov. 1, you can drive a little faster – legally – on the south end of Interstate-285.An audio version of this story
The new speed limit signs will read 65 miles per hour on I-285 below I-20. It is part of the Georgia Department of Transportation’s plan to keep traffic moving on the Perimeter.
GDOT spokesperson Natalie Dale says crash and congestion data show the new speed limit will also be safer because a good portion of drivers already exceed 55 miles per hour. “When you have people who are all going more of the same speed, they’re sort of driving in harmony with the speed limit, you have less chances of crashes, of secondary crashes, of people speeding up just to slam on their brakes,” says Dale. “So we feel this will be a really good step for that area.”
Dale says the north end of the Perimeter has nearly twice as many interchanges and up to 100,000 more drivers per day, so the speed limit there requires more regulation. GDOT will install variable speed limit signs on I-285 north of I-20 which should be operational in about a year.
