On the “City Lights” series “Speaking of Music,” local musicians share their work and stories in their own voices. In today’s segment, we feature the Atlanta band Internet Islands.
Vocalist Miyon describes their sound as “a little bit leaning towards like pop, rock, I think, indie” but the group also definitely takes some cues from post-punk and the lonesome soundscapes of alternative rock. “We like to experiment a lot with different styles and sounds,” says Miyon.
Atlanta plays a large part in her inspiration, explaining that “Atlanta’s always been a great source of inspiration for music. There’s so much diversity here and so many different styles that you come across. Generally there’s just an energy to Atlanta and a lot of history that just kind of makes you excited to live here.”
The music itself also “offers a sort of therapeutic release” for Miyon, “it’s easy to be distracted by a lot of things, but making music and writing songs really allows me to focus my attention into something. You know, I know something sounds good if I’m just drawn into it and playing for hours.”
