Investigative journalist takes an in-depth look at the conditions in the Fulton County Jail

The plight of the Fulton County Jail is at the core of a new investigative report.

In 2022, the facility endured 11 fires, 534 fights, 114 stabbings and at least two murders, including Shamar McLeroy’s.

Lashawn Thompson, 35, was found dead in September 2022, three months after being housed at the jail’s psychiatric unit. An independent autopsy report found Thompson’s cause of death to be “complications due to severe neglect.”

According to a new investigative report, published in Atlanta Magazine and titled “The real behind the wall: A look inside the infamous, deadly Fulton County Jail,” at least 15 people died at the jail in 2022 and at least three people have died this year.

On Monday’s edition of “Closer Look,” George Chidi, a journalist and writer of “The Atlanta Objective” and author of the report, talked with show host Rose Scott about his investigation into the reportedly poor conditions of the Fulton County Jail.
