King Center Calls for One-Day Moratorium on Violence on King Holiday

  There are dozens of events scheduled in Atlanta over the next week including film screenings, panel discussions, and events for young people.

Bernice King, Doctor Martin Luther King, Junior’s daughter, announced an event that will take no formal organization — but worldwide participation — on the King Holiday.

She says the goal, on January 20, is that no shots be fired. “No shooting off at the mouth with our tongue, negative and demeaning words; no shooting off physically with our fists, pushing, shoving hitting; and no shooting off of any type of gun. Just for one day.”

King acknowledges that is an ambitious goal, but she says the call for a one-day moratorium on violence marks the King Center’s five-year initiative to influence one million people to embrace non-violence as a lifestyle.
