King Family Weighs in on MLK Statue Bill Signing

Governor Nathan Deal is expected to sign a bipartisan bill Tuesday to place a statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the grounds of the Georgia Capitol. Family members of Dr. King gave WABE their thoughts on the statue.

Several members of the King family say they’re pleased there will be a statue honoring Dr. King on the grounds of the Georgia Capitol. Dr. Christine King Farris is Dr. Martin Luther King Junior’s sister.

“I think about his life and his work, and I think he deserves it.”

Martin Luther King the III also says it’s positive Governor Deal is signing legislation to pay tribute to his father. But because his father preached non-violence he’s concerned about some other legislation governor Deal has signed, particularly a bill expanding the number of places Georgians can carry guns with concealed weapons permits.

“I’m honored that the governor would certainly sign legislation that creates a memorial to dad, but I’m troubled or concerned about the new gun legislation that just passed, that was also signed, because you honor Dr. King, but it seems to me that’s an inconsistent policy, but that’s politics.”

The bipartisan bill passed the House and the Senate overwhelmingly. Representative Calvin Smyre says private fundraising for the statue is underway and the location where it will sit is still being determined.
