Latest Charges of Racism Not New At North Atlanta High School
Officials with the Atlanta Public Schools are not commenting on claims of racism at North Atlanta High School.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported emails exchanged from APS board chairman Reuben McDaniel and member Nancy Meister differs on how to investigate those claims.
But this isn’t the first time charges of racism have been levied at the high school and the middle school that feeds into it.
According to a letter obtained by WABE, parents met in January with APS Deputy Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Karen Waldon concerning educators at North Atlanta High School and Sutton Middle School.
The letter dated February 6th thanks Waldon for the January meeting.
APS has confirmed a meeting took place and race was addressed.
Some parents charged educators at Sutton Middle were discouraging minority students from entering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program.
At North Atlanta, there are accusations of positive reinforcement given to white students, while African-American students were openly told of their “deficiencies”.
The letter details explicit complaints for specific educators.
That includes North Atlanta’s former principal Mark Mygrant.
He was recently let go by the district.
The letter accuses Mygrant of accepting and nurturing a climate of open discrimination based on race and socio-economic status.
A spokesperson for the district told WABE the January meeting was “news” to the superintendent.
However the letter does copy Superintendent Erroll B. Davis, Jr. and Steve Smith, Deputy Superintendent/Chief of Staff for the district.
The spokesperson says the letter was sent to the district’s internal compliance officer.
