Latke Cooking

Amanda Bunder teaches kids at Rambam Atlanta Day School. She cooks latkes for her students in December in celebration of Hanukkah.

According to Bunder there is a symbolic meaning for latkes, a mix of potatoes and onions shallow fried in oil. The Festival of Lights happened when a small pitcher of oil — just enough for one day — lasted for eight. So at this time of year she says that people of the Jewish faith traditionally eat foods cooked in oil.
