Life of Coretta Scott King Celebrated

The life of Coretta Scott King was remembered during a special celebration held at the King Center Monday. Coretta Scott King was the wife of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and in her own right a major participant in the American Civil Rights movement.

This past Sunday Coretta Scott King would have been 87. She died in 2006. King’s daughter, Dr. Bernice King, said her mother’s legacy is just as important as her father’s…especially for the work she continued after he was assassinated.

“She raised her four children while at the same time helping to raise a nation, because at that time there were riots, and this was a grieving window, and had she come out in anger and vindictiveness there’s no telling what would have happened to America.”

Bernice King said her mother led the campaign to establish Dr. King’s birthday as a national holiday and worked tirelessly to build and develop programs for the King Center.
