Tuesday marked the 50th anniversary celebration of Lockheed Martin’s C-5 galaxy planes.

The Marietta-based company recalled the history of its massive military plane.

The C-5 took it’s first flight in 1968 and is billed as the U.S. Air Force’s largest active plane and strategic airlifter.

Gov. Nathan Deal, who spoke at the event, mentioned the unique ability to load cargo through the front of the plane by lifting up the nose.

“You know the truth is nobody will snub its nose at this aircraft,” Deal said. “Nobody will snub its nose at Marietta or the state of Georgia because of this aircraft.”

Deal said he thinks the jobs created while constructing the C-5 planes have left the rest of the world envious of the city and state.

The aerospace company said the new C-5 Supergalaxy plane will be in service until 2040.
