The nation’s oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships for military children recently received a $65 million gift.

The largest gift in the history of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation was given by Fred Smith, a Marine Corps veteran and founder and chairman of FedEx.

On Friday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Major General Charles F. Bolden Jr., a former NASA administrator and astronaut, told program host Rose Scott that the funds will split to establish the Brown Hudner Navy Scholarship Foundation.

Students awarded the scholarships must have a parent who served in the Marine Corps or U.S. Navy.

In addition, to qualify for the Brown Hudner Navy Scholarship, students must study science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) and health sciences.

The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation does not require a specific major, all of the scholarships are open to students in all 50 states attending post-high school, undergraduate, and career and technical education programs.

“If you look at the pictures of the kids receiving these scholarships, it’s like America,” said Bolden.“That’s what I love about it.”
