MARTA Files Paperwork to Study Extension to Alpharetta
MARTA is studying a possible extension well past its last rail station in Dunwoody in north Atlanta.
The transit agency has filed preliminary paperwork with the federal government to offer service from the North Springs MARTA station to Windward Parkway in Alpharetta.
MARTA CEO Keith Parker said the new service route, which would run parallel with Georgia 400, is being considered alongside proposed lines to Emory University and Stonecrest Mall in Lithonia (…both of which are much farther along in the planning stages than the north Atlanta extension).
“[Georgia] 400 does not stand out above any of those other corridors. All of them are in play at the same time,” said Parker. “We have not decided upon which would go first, for example, and how we exactly would pay for it.”
State Sen. Fran Millar (R – Atlanta), a member of MARTA’s state oversight committee, said the Dunwoody extension would make a lot of sense for the growing region.
As to whether the state should consider helping MARTA fund it?
“Well, you know, it depends really. We’ve got this big thing hanging over our heads right now. It’s called the President’s health care program,” said Millar. “You’ve got to balance the need of where the funding is going to come from for various other things.”
MARTA is holding a public meeting Sept. 26 at Alpharetta City Hall to gather feedback on the proposed north Atlanta extension.
