MARTA to Install Cameras on Entire Fleet

MARTA officials are rolling out a plan to install cameras on all of their buses, trains, and mobility vans. The project will be completed in June 2014.

Sgt. Aston Greene, with the MARTA police department, says they’ll pilot the program next week, starting with seven buses on different routes.

“We’re doing this first run so we can see how things work, make sure all of our installation is fine,” he says, “It’s sort of a testing and evaluation phase.”

Greene says by June 2013, every bus will have six external and three internal cameras.

“We have a public view monitor that shows everybody on the bus that they’re being recorded,” Greene says, “And we’re hoping that will serve as a great deterrent to people who want to do things that are not appropriate on the bus.”

The majority of the $17 million project is funded through a federal grant. MARTA revenues pay for the rest.
