A Washington, D.C. campaign finance scandal appears to have a connection to Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed.

Reed is among a host of politicians — from the President to governors to Senators — who received questionable donations from a wealthy D.C. businessman. To hear an audio version of this story, click the 'Play' icon above.

That businessman, Jeffrey Thompson, is implicated in what federal authorities call a “shadow campaign,” which officials say put $650,000 into D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray’s 2009 election fund.

Thompson hasn’t been charged with a crime, although several of his employees have pleaded guilty in the case.

According to the Center for Public Integrity, records show Thompson and his employees gave more than $65,000 to Mayor Reed’s 2009 campaign.

Reed’s spokeswoman*, Sonji Jacobs, tells WABE in an email that all donations from or related to Mr. Thompson have “been given to a variety of local and national charitable organizations, which is same course of action taken by several other elected officials around the country.”

Jacobs  says the amounts and dates will be on the Mayor’s September campaign disclosure.

(* Jacobs, who is employed by the City of Atlanta as the mayor’s spokeswoman, says she is not affiliated with Reed’s campaign.)
