Mayor’s Summer Reading Club

Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed kicked off his summer reading initiative over the weekend at the Children’s Museum of Atlanta. The program is meant to tie in with First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s read, Let’s move” initiative.

About 2 dozen kids sat on the floor of the Children’s Museum of Atlanta to hear Mayor Kasim Reed as he read the book “Amari’s Adventure”.

“Amari called dad from downstairs. Wake up, it’s your special day with Mama and Will”.

Thousands of copies of this book and 2 others will go to children this summer.

Mayor Reed says all families should be reading to their kids. Rena Walker agrees. She plans to read these books to her third grader.

“I mean it’s exciteing to see that he came out to read to the kids and let the kids know that everybody reads. And we do need to read to our kids more to educate them on what’s going on out here in the world.”

These free books are aimed at children from infancy to 8 years old who aren’t exposed to books in the home. More information can be found at: http://www.geears.org/resources/mayors-reading-club/
