Metro Area Residents Take Advantage of Early Voting
The Georgia Secretary of State says more than 328,000 Georgians have taken advantage of early voting in person or by mail. So far, Fulton County has the highest early voting numbers in the state with more than 30,000 voters casting their ballots. Sharon Mitchell is the Interim Director of Fulton County Registration and Elections:
“Our turnout so far has exceeded our expectations. Certainly in comparison to 2008, we’re seeing the numbers exceed the level we saw at this time in the early voting process.”
Despite the high early voting numbers, Mitchell says the county is expecting the same percentage of voters as in 2008. During that general election, 70 percent of the county’s voters cast ballots.
According to the Secretary of State’s office, DeKalb and Cobb counties have the next highest numbers of early voters. Currently, nearly 28,000 DeKalb residents have voted early and more than 14,000 Cobb County residents have voted by mail or in person. Both counties tell WABE they’re experiencing a steady stream of voters and are preparing for approximately the same number of voters as four years ago.
