With high weather alerts being forecast in the face of Hurricane Helene, several metro Atlanta school districts have decided to either cancel or alter scheduled classes, athletic events and extracurricular activities.
Atlanta Public Schools
Atlanta Public Schools have canceled all instruction for Thursday and Friday, with district employees scheduled to work remotely.
“An update will be provided on Friday afternoon for activities currently planned for Saturday, September 28, 2024,” the district’s website read.
Banks County Schools
Banks County Schools schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday for all students and staff. All extracurricular activities and sports events were canceled for both days as well.
Bartow County Schools
Bartow County Schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday for all students and staff, with Thursday’s extracurricular and athletic activities canceled.
Butts County Schools
Butts County Schools will remain open for students and faculty on Thursday, with classes cancelled on Friday.
Calhoun City Schools
Calhoun City Schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday, and after-school activities for Thursday are pending. Whether Friday’s activities will remain as scheduled has yet to be announced.
Carroll County Schools
Carroll County Schools will keep their schools open on Thursday, with all after school extracurricular activities cancelled. Friday will serve as a distance learning day for students, with all district employees assigned to work remotely.
Chattooga County Schools
Chattooga County Schools has canceled all courses for Thursday and Friday, as well as all after-school activities for Thursday.
Cherokee County Schools
Cherokee County Schools has cancelled all classes that were scheduled for Thursday and Friday.
Clark Atlanta University
Clark Atlanta University will close its campus at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, with all courses being conducted remotely on Friday.
Clarke County Schools
Clarke County School District has announced their schools will stay open for Thursday and Friday, canceling only after-school activities for Thursday.
Clayton County Schools
Clayton County Schools has pivoted to asynchronous virtual instruction and work for Thursday and closures of district schools and offices on Friday.
All athletic events, extracurricular activities and school system-related events and programs for Thursday, Friday and Saturday have also been canceled.
Clayton State University
Clayton State University will close it’s campus at 1 p.m. on Thursday and have cancelled all courses for Friday.
Coweta County Schools
In Coweta County Schools, all classes and after-school extracurricular activities have been cancelled for Thursday and Friday.
Dawson County Schools
All schools in Dawson County have cancelled their classes and after school activities for Thursday and Friday.
City of Decatur Schools
All City Schools of Decatur facilities will be closed on Thursday and Friday. After-school activities have been canceled on both days as well.
DeKalb County Schools
DeKalb Schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday. This includes all school-based, district-wide, extracurricular and athletic events.
Douglas County Schools
After-school activities and programs are canceled Thursday at Douglas County Schools. All classes, after-school events and activities are canceled Friday.
Emory University
Emory University will switch over to virtual learning courses on Thursday and Friday. Employees for the campus have been assigned to work remotely.
Fannin County Schools
Fannin County Schools will have virtual learning days on Thursday and Friday, with all extracurricular activities canceled for both days.
Floyd County Schools
Floyd County Schools has canceled all classes for Thursday and Friday, as well as after-school activities for the former day.
Fulton County Schools
Fulton Schools canceled all extracurricular activities for Thursday. All schools and administrative offices will be closed on Friday.
Gordon County Schools
Gordon County Schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday for all students and staff. All extracurricular activities and sports events scheduled for Thursday were cancelled as well.
“At this time, we believe that Friday evening and Saturday events will continue as planned,” said a release on Gordon County Schools website. “We will continue to assess conditions to ensure the safety of all. We encourage our families and community members to stay safe and follow any advisories from local authorities.”
Greene County Schools
While classes were held on Thursday, Greene County Schools made the decision to cancel all extracurricular after-school activities. The school system has made the decision to cancel classes for Friday.
Gwinnett County Schools
Gwinnett County Schools will offer remote learning on Thursday, with all schools closed on Friday and activities cancelled. All county activities scheduled for Saturday have also been cancelled.
Hall County Schools
Hall County Schools, although closing their facilities, will commence online instruction for the rest of the week. District-wide activities and sports events will be cancelled on Thursday and Friday.
Henry County Schools
Henry County Schools has canceled all classes for Thursday and Friday and all after-school activities for both days.
Jasper County Schools
Jasper County Schools kept their facilities open on Thursday but canceled all after-school activities. A decision has yet to be made about whether classes will occur on Friday.
Kennesaw State University
Kennesaw State University has canceled all courses scheduled for Thursday and Friday.
Lumpkin County Schools
All schools in Lumpkin County have been closed to students and staff members for Thursday and Friday.
Morehouse College
Morehouse College will close its campus at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, with all courses being conducted remotely on Friday.
Morehouse School of Medicine
Morehouse School of Medicine will close its campus at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, with all courses being conducted remotely on Friday.
Newton County Schools
Newton County Schools will have classes and all after-school activities cancelled for the remainder of the week. Saturday activities are still planned to go on as scheduled.
Oconee County Schools
Oconee County Schools have remained open on Thursdays, but will be closed on Friday. After school activities have been cancelled for both days.
Oglethorpe County Schools
Oglethorpe County Schools have remained open on Thursdays, but will be closed on Friday. After school activities have been cancelled for both days.
Oglethorpe University
Oglethorpe University have cancelled courses for Thursday and Friday.
Paulding County Schools
Paulding County Schools announced earlier Wednesday that all school district offices, schools and facilities will be closed Thursday and Friday, as well as extracurricular activities.
Pickens County Schools
Pickens County Schools will also offer digital instruction on Thursday, with staff and district faculty reporting in person. On Friday, however, both school and district facilities will be closed.
Polk County Schools
While Polk County Schools has announced virtual learning days for Thursday and Friday, there has not yet been a decision made on after school activities.
Rockdale County Schools
Rockdale County Schools will offer remote learning Thursday, with schools and offices closed on Friday.
Spelman College
Spelman College will close its campus at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, with all courses being conducted remotely on Friday.
Troup County Schools
Troup County Schools and System Offices are all scheduled to be closed for the remainder of the week.
Union County Schools
Union County Schools have placed their students on at-home learning for Thursday and Friday.
“Students are encouraged to complete their at-home learning activities if conditions allow,” the website said. “All extracurricular activities are canceled over the weekend and will be reevaluated on Monday, 9/30/24.”
University of Georgia
The main campus of the university will be closed on Thursday and Friday.
